Flavor add

Pomegranate in a smoothie

Sharp, deep red, and the seed inside every aril decides how you blend it.

Short answer

About ½ cup in a glass — 87 g and 72 calories at that amount. The readings are 1 of 3 for thickening, 0 for creaminess and 2 for sweetness. Sweetness is what pomegranate is really for. Whatever the blend needs on the other two axes has to come from somewhere else in the glass.

Pomegranate arils are tart rather than sweet and they color a blend harder than anything else in the fresh-fruit list. They carry a little body but no creaminess, so they work as an accent on a base that is already thick rather than as the fruit a smoothie is built on.

In the ratio model every ingredient fills one of five roles. Pomegranate is a flavor add: nothing in the texture changes when it goes in, so the ratio model gives it no share of the glass. That is what decides how much of it goes in, which is the next question on this page.

How much pomegranate to put in a smoothie

The ratio model does not portion pomegranate at all — it takes up no meaningful room, so it goes in on top of a finished blend rather than instead of something. One 1/2 cup is 87 g.

There is no texture penalty for using more of it, only a flavor one — and overshooting with pomegranate is easier than people expect. Taste before the second spoonful, not after.

Taking up no room is not the same as costing nothing. One 1/2 cup of pomegranate is 72 calories, which lands on top of whatever the rest of the glass already carries — the table below is the whole of it.

The model portions one amount for this role, so there is no range to work within.

What pomegranate does to the texture

Every ingredient on this site is rated out of three on the only three jobs that matter in a blender. Those ratings are what the substitution engine scores against, so they are the same numbers the rest of the site works from.

Thickness 1 / 3
A little body

Expect a small amount of body from pomegranate — enough to notice against water, not enough to build a blend on. Take it as a bonus rather than the reason it went in.

Creaminess 0 / 3
Nothing creamy about it

No richness is left behind. A blend built around pomegranate needs a yogurt, a nut butter or an avocado somewhere, or it will read thin and sharp however thick it is.

Sweetness 2 / 3
Moderately sweet

Sweetens noticeably. Stack pomegranate with a second sweet ingredient and the drink tips into dessert territory faster than the calorie total suggests.

Sweetness is what pomegranate is really for. Whatever the blend needs on the other two axes has to come from somewhere else in the glass.

What goes well with pomegranate

Its best partners

blueberry , greek yogurt , cherry , orange juice and banana . Each of those either covers something pomegranate does not do, or leans the same way hard enough to make the drink taste deliberate.

What to use instead of pomegranate

Each stand-in is scored against pomegranate on all three jobs at once, by the same engine behind the substitution calculator. Calories and sugar are for one everyday measure of the replacement; the smaller figure underneath is the difference against the same measure of pomegranate.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

More on blending with pomegranate

Can you blend whole pomegranate seeds?

Yes, but you will taste them. Each aril is a pocket of juice around a small woody seed, and a household blender breaks those seeds into fine grit rather than dissolving them — the drink comes out slightly rough and faintly bitter. Two ways round it: blend the arils with the liquid first and strain before the rest goes in, or use pomegranate juice and keep a few whole arils on top. A high-powered blender gets closer but does not eliminate it.

Are pomegranate arils too tart on their own?

For most people, yes. They pair best with something creamy to sit against — yogurt is the usual answer — or with a sweeter fruit carrying the middle of the drink. Straight pomegranate and water is closer to a juice than a smoothie.
