Flavor add

Spinach in a smoothie

The green you can hide — a full cup disappears behind almost any fruit.

Short answer

About 1 cup in a glass — 30 g and 7 calories at that amount. The readings are 0 of 3 for thickening, 0 for creaminess and 0 for sweetness. All three readings are zero, which makes spinach a flavor ingredient and nothing else — the texture of the glass is identical before and after it goes in.

Spinach is the default green on this site for one reason: it has no thickness, no creaminess and almost no flavor of its own, so a full cup changes the color of a blend without changing the taste. That is the whole trade — it is a nutrient add with a color side effect, not a texture ingredient.

In the ratio model every ingredient fills one of five roles. Spinach is a flavor add: nothing in the texture changes when it goes in, so the ratio model gives it no share of the glass. That is what decides how much of it goes in, which is the next question on this page.

How much spinach to put in a smoothie

The ratio model does not portion spinach at all — it takes up no meaningful room, so it goes in on top of a finished blend rather than instead of something. One cup is 30 g.

There is no texture penalty for using more of it, only a flavor one — and overshooting with spinach is easier than people expect. Taste before the second spoonful, not after.

The model portions one amount for this role, so there is no range to work within.

What spinach does to the texture

Every ingredient on this site is rated out of three on the only three jobs that matter in a blender. Those ratings are what the substitution engine scores against, so they are the same numbers the rest of the site works from.

Thickness 0 / 3
It does not thicken

Adding spinach changes nothing about how thick the blend is. Whatever body the drink has comes from the frozen fruit and the base — if it is pouring thin, this is not the ingredient to add more of.

Creaminess 0 / 3
Nothing creamy about it

No richness is left behind. A blend built around spinach needs a yogurt, a nut butter or an avocado somewhere, or it will read thin and sharp however thick it is.

Sweetness 0 / 3
No sweetness of its own

None at all. Every bit of sweetness in the glass has to come from the fruit or from something added for the purpose, which is useful when you want to control it.

All three readings are zero, which makes spinach a flavor ingredient and nothing else — the texture of the glass is identical before and after it goes in.

Figures for spinach. Everything on the site — every recipe, every calculator — sums from these same numbers, so a total you see elsewhere will always agree with this table.

What goes well with spinach

Its best partners

blueberry , banana , pineapple , mango and almond milk . Each of those either covers something spinach does not do, or leans the same way hard enough to make the drink taste deliberate.

Recipes that already use it

33 pairings on the site put spinach in the glass, with the amounts and the macros already worked out — here are 8 of them.

What to use instead of spinach

Each stand-in is scored against spinach on all three jobs at once, by the same engine behind the substitution calculator. Calories and sugar are for one everyday measure of the replacement; the smaller figure underneath is the difference against the same measure of spinach.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

More on blending with spinach

Can you taste spinach in a smoothie?

Not behind a sweet fruit, and this is the difference between spinach and kale. Baby spinach in particular is mild enough that a full cup vanishes behind banana, mango or pineapple. What does not vanish is the color — spinach plus red or purple fruit gives a muddy brown, so pair it with yellow or green fruit if you care how the glass looks.

Fresh or frozen spinach?

Either. Frozen spinach is cheaper, keeps longer and adds a little chill, but it clumps, so break it up before it goes in. Fresh baby spinach blends more evenly and is the easier one if your blender is not powerful.
